Signs of Termites in Ohio Homes
Eastern subterranean termites live in the soil and feed on wood from the inside, so most homeowners never see the termites themselves. What you can see is the evidence they leave behind:
- Mud tubes: pencil-width tunnels of soil running up foundation walls, piers, or basement framing.
- Swarmers and discarded wings: winged termites near windows and doors, usually in spring, often followed by shed wings on sills.
- Hollow or blistered wood: trim, floor joists, or sill plates that sound hollow when tapped or give under pressure.
- Sticking doors and windows: moisture from termite activity can warp frames, though this has other causes too.
Termites or Carpenter Ants?
Flying ants and termite swarmers show up at the same time of year and are easy to confuse. Termites have straight antennae, a thick waist, and two pairs of wings the same length. Carpenter ants have elbowed antennae, a pinched waist, and front wings longer than the back pair. The damage differs too: carpenter ants push out coarse, sawdust-like debris, while termites pack their galleries with soil. Every termite job starts with a free, no-obligation inspection of the foundation, basement or crawlspace, and any wood in contact with soil. From there we recommend one approach or a combination:

Spring swarm season is when most people first notice activity. A home sale, refinance, or VA loan needs a WDI termite inspection on the NPMA-33 form rather than a standard inspection.

How do I know if I have termites?
The most reliable signs are mud tubes on foundation walls, swarms of winged insects or discarded wings near windows in spring, and wood that sounds hollow or looks blistered. Many transactions require one. VA loans require a wood-destroying insect report in Ohio, and conventional and FHA lenders often ask for it too. That report is a WDI inspection on the NPMA-33 form, which is separate from our standard homeowner termite inspection.
